The standard of budget guesthouses in Ulan Bator is increasing each year. Back in 2004, they were mostly dark, dingy places, but these days things have changed for the better.
My recommended budget accommodation in Ulan Bator is the Golden Gobi. It's centrally located just near the State Department Store, not far from Suhkbaatar Square. It's Mongolian-owned, family operated, and quite homely.
The Golden Gobi has hostel-style rooms for the budget-conscious, as well as private rooms for those who want their own space, but still want the friendly, communal feel of a hostel with a shared lounge and kitchen. I met my wife there in 2008! She had been staying there for months and we consider the owners close friends.
It is the ideal place to go if you are traveling solo, as it's a really easy place to meet people to have a chat or go out for a drink or a coffee. For this reason, I always pick a place like this to stay rather than a more luxurious, but impersonal and unfriendly, hotel.
Golden Gobi is one of Ulan Bator's most popular hotels. They also arrange tours, so there are plenty of other guests to meet and share the cost of a trip out into the countryside.
Other budget accommodation in Ulan Bator to consider is Khongor Guesthouse or the Lotus Guesthouse. But I would choose Golden Gobi for the friendly atmosphere.

Mid-Range Accommodation in Ulan Bator
A new accommodation option in Ulaan Baatar for 2013 is a three-star hotel set up by Hovd. Not a bad option for those who want something a little newer and with more comfort and privacy, but are still seeking a pleasant, friendly place to stay.
